How "safer" is the "new safer IE8"?

I've tried installing, and reinstalling it a few times. It never worked. Furthermore, now I can't install IE7 or IE6 because I get the complaint that a newer version was found - Even after fully uninstalling IE8. Therefore I'm using Firefox and Avant browsers. I've no idea how safe IE8 is as it's never run on my PC.
