Why do people you hardly know feel the need to tell you about their personal life?

There's a woman at work who I hardly know (she's new) who, every morning, has another story about what's going on in her personal life. I don't ask she just tells me. She'll tell anyone who'll listen. Her daughters an alcoholic. Her other daughter is suicidal. Her granddaughters dad's in prison. What am I supposed to say?
